{"id":327,"date":"2018-01-11T00:53:13","date_gmt":"2018-01-11T08:53:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ad6dm.net\/log\/?p=327"},"modified":"2018-01-11T00:53:13","modified_gmt":"2018-01-11T08:53:13","slug":"80m-rtty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ad6dm.net\/log\/2018\/01\/80m-rtty\/","title":{"rendered":"80m RTTY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I found a load of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sigidwiki.com\/wiki\/Radio_Teletype_(RTTY)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RTTY<\/a> on 80m band on Sunday night (1\/7\/2018). I tuned to 3580 kHz and found a particularly strong signal, so I hooked up my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tigertronics.com\/slusbmain.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USB soundcard<\/a> to my laptop, fired up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w1hkj.com\/beginners.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fldigi<\/a> and made attempts to reply, but I guess my <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/QRP_operation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">QRP<\/a> setup didn&#8217;t get heard in all the pileup chatter.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out, January 6-7 was &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arrl.org\/rtty-roundup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ARRL RTTY Roundup<\/a>&#8220;, a nationwide contest to make contacts in the digital format, so it was easy to catch the conversations on almost all HF bands.<\/p>\n<p>I found the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CQ_(call)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CQ<\/a>&#8216;s in this format a bit odd, and didn&#8217;t really know how to format my responses or how to call CQ myself. I saw things like: TEST N6JJ N6JJ CQ (not real callsign), or CQ RU N6JK CQ.<\/p>\n<p>What?<\/p>\n<p>I went with the way I new how to call CQ, which was: CQ CQ DE AD6DM PSE K. (meaning: Calling any station from AD6DM please reply). No replies.<\/p>\n<p>There were a lot of transmissions like: W7KJ N6JK 599 5NN TU 73.<\/p>\n<p>I took these to mean an acknowledgement, a signal report, thank you, best regards.<\/p>\n<p>RTTY is a very quick format. It&#8217;s like a drive-by greeting that is over before you know it. It&#8217;s probably how hams did contest contact-gathering before the more modern semi-automated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/WSJT_(amateur_radio_software)#FT8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FT8<\/a> format.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, I want to get out there on RTTY and give it more of a try.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I found a load of RTTY on 80m band on Sunday night (1\/7\/2018).
